It comes with IE, Netscape, Outlook Express and there are still thousands of applications to freely download or purchase. But even today OS9 could serve a less-needy user. ![]() Today users require so much from their desktop software that developing and delivering an OS has lost lots of its joy. OS9 reminded me of another era, a more innocent era in operating systems. Once again (since I used to use a G4 Cube) I was amazed at how fast Mac OS 9.2 boots and operates. Thankfully I had two Apple-branded input devices in my storage room which I successfully used with this iMac. The iMac came only with a power cable and no CDs or manuals, and no keyboard or mouse. The model we received (quality grade: C) features a 400 Mhz G3 CPU, 8 MB ATI Rage 128 graphics card, 64 MB RAM (we quickly upgraded it to 320 MB of RAM with a new 256 MB RAM Geeks also sent us), a 10 GB Quantum Fireball drive, a DVD-ROM, ethernet, modem, 2 usb 1.1, 2x firewire (industry first at the time), audio I/O, onboard microphone/speakers, 15″ XGA CRT, airport-ready. Read more as to how this old good classic iMac G3 performed. They sent us one in, a 400 Mhz DV model (first released in October 1999) and we tried out not only Mac OS 9.2.2 but also the latest Mac OS X, v10.4.7. Recently restocked their Mac line with refurbished iMac G3s. I was always fond of the looks of the classic iMacs. Thanks.A few months ago Thom bought and reviewed an iMac G3 333 Mhz while it was running Mac OS 9. Keep in mind, this 9650 had been sitting in my basement for over 12 years before I got the itch to do this stuff.thanks to you guys after reading this particular post.) All drives run smooth now that I fixed the issues above. (Just FYI, my 9650 has 4 hard drives in it 2 run 8.6, one drive runs 9.2.2 and the other of course runs 9.1/10.4. Should I install that as well OR does that carry over from 9.1 install and Xpostfacto boot up into 10.4? I also haven't installed the Crescendo 2.3 s/w on 10.4 either because system profiler shows that G3 upgrade card is working. ![]() So my question is should I try to install the cache enabler while in 10.4 (from Sonnet or PowerLogix) OR try to initiate it from Xpostfacto? I want to do this because 10.4 does run a bit sluggish but at same time, it is working without freezing or locking up. Originally in Xpostfacto, I had that selection turned off as many said that caused issues during installation.and when I too tried it, my installation locked up and I haven't gone back and tried it since. So now, I want to enable the L2 cache on my G3 upgrade card. I downloaded several updates and installed them all and and it all went smooth (knock on wood). It booted right into 10.4 and I haven't had a freeze or lockup in the day I have played with it. Power supply arrived, installed it, crossed my fingers and turned it on. The flex cable going to the 10.4 drive was a 30awg just felt kind of wimpy. I found a bent pin on one hard drive and a broken pin on another (lucky for me the broken pin was on a modified connector I made to make it easier to plug into hard drive).Īfter fixing those issues, I checked all hard drive jumper configs and flex cabling. While I was waiting for another power supply to arrive, I dug into the physical connections inside. During troubleshooting the 10.4 freezing I was experiencing, my power supply died. ![]()
